Fantastic

The last episode of Dr. Who was simply great. Cunning how all the threads ran through the series.

Tom Baker was my favourite Dr. Who; sorry Tom - no longer!

Resolution

What a difference a day makes.

All seems sorted now and I have been on top of the moon today; many issues resolved, new life path ahead (still in teaching), lots to think about.

I may go quiet for a while on here but I am certainly still about and still watching you all (with the help of Google Reader). By the way, what has happened to Feedjit? Just an upgrade I suppose.

Crunch Time

It has been bad, really bad recently [i.e. only the last 4 days] hence the start of my other blog.

I've been very upset tonight and have largely had to deal with it on my own other than an e-mail I sent a good and wise friend who replied. All I seem to be good at is upsetting people.

At 51 I'm pretty sure I am past my sell by date as a teacher. I don't seem to command respect, I'm holding onto values from the 1960s (when pupils did what teachers told them to, or so it appeared to me then) and they simply do not work in the 21st century. I'm an ex-organist trying to teach music to 'modern' kids who prefer sport and understand iPods.

I'd like to train to become a piano tuner. It's a 3 year course. Imagine, 3 years with no income. I did have some savings but have recently bought a newer car so the savings are depleted. I would also have to pay for the course. I need to win the Lottery.

So if you any bright ideas how I can keep a roof over our heads, food on the table, and pay for a 3-year full time course, do let me know.

New

My blogging mentor has given me the idea of starting an invitation only blog HERE - this is not about depression as such; it's just a place to let off steam and type about 'issues'.

If you are interested enough to want to read it drop me an e-mail (see side bar). Hopefully there will not be many posts.

The bin

It seems I forgot to upload the photo of the bin in the previous post so here it is.

Peterborough - the down side

As you will have seen I spent the afternoon in Peterborough. The cathedral precinct is not the place it once was.

The cathedral shop complex has closed:

The coffee shop which used to be in Becket's Chapel (see below: which was the song school when I was a chorister)...

has moved back to where it was quite a number of years ago now:

and is an extremely disappointing emporium. Called 'Coffee & Cookies', that's all it has. Gone are the hot meals. Gone is the selection of freshly made sandwiches. Everything is now pre-wrapped. The sandwiches are made by a local company and I faced the vast selection of THREE (2 were Egg and Tomato in tomato bread, 1 wasn't). This was at lunchtime, mark you, and even as I munched at 13:25, people arriving were being told, "That's all we have left" as if the place was doing such a roaring trade the late punters were stupid for having dilly-dallied.

I beg to differ. The cold box was smaller than my old television. The staff seemed bored witless and the place was practically empty. OK it isn't mid-summer but I ask you, what did they do with the ambiance?

Then there's the approach to drainage and repair around this important building which had a £7 million appeal some years ago - they finished the work and then some idiot set fire to the place; they had to start again. Yet this is how they think drains ought to be repaired.

Note the down pipe from the gutter is broken and spills onto a plank of wood. There were at least two of these.

The entrance to the organ console is where it has always been but they seem to have used the iron spiral staircase from the old organ loft which was in use pre-1940 (if not earlier). and on the North side of the cathedral. The old stairs will have been lost in the fire but at least they were wider.

Finally, what really annoyed me was the litter bin up in the organ console. Why do you need a litter bin in an organ console? There never used to be one. Litter did not accumulate there; it was taken away. Mind you, there are some pretty untidy organ lofts around the country. Putting litter in a bin is an excuse not to take it elsewhere until the bin get full, then you have to empty it. It just delays a job.

What is MORE annoying is what the bin contains. Drink cartons, a coffee cup and an empty water bottle. WHY then do the cathedral bother to issue the following instructions to organists? One has to assume that their own organists are taking drink into the console, although the organ juice carton was that of the guy before who clearly had not read the rules. This makes me cross (click to enlarge). Do people not understand the word refrain?

But it is so common in society these days. You must not use a mobile phone while you are driving - oh that doesn't apply to ME people think. Yes it does dick brain! You are exactly the sort of person it does apply to because you clearly need telling.

Arrghh I give up.

I shall not hasten back to Peterborough. All my happy childhood memories are still with me and I do not want to destroy them. Even the smell of the building has gone from the South Transept.

What a day

Well, now you get to see me. Here I am sitting at the organ console at Peterborough Cathedral.

I got up today, as usual, at 6.30am and had breakfast. I then went to school (yes, on a Saturday as it is a boarding school). I was able to leave at 12.00 and drive to Peterborough where I had been booked by a visiting choir to play for Evensong. Unfortunately, when I arrived there was a service going on (which I had been warned about) so I was not able to get any practice time on the organ before the main rehearsal with the choir at 2.00pm.

Luckily the piston settings for the divisions were pretty much as I would have set them myself (I just had to change the Swell Mixture to the Cymbal) and I managed to set up 5 General Pistons [buttons which can be made to control the sounds on all the keyboards] while the choir was rehearsing the Responses.

I'd had a session on a large organ more local to me and had covered my music with small post-it notes so that I could write instructions at various points.

Having played the instrument in my youth (although it has been rebuilt twice since then) I soon found I was able to make a decent fist of accompanying the choir; not as brilliant as I should have liked but, in the circumstances, very acceptable.

I had taken really simple voluntaries to play before and after. I was glad when it was all over.

First

Our daughter has just let us know she has obtained a 'First' from Cambridge, in Natural Sciences. She is actually going to do a 4th year so she may not 'officially' graduate until next year.

Well done girl.

I never anticipated that

As part of my job I take a carpentry activity in the evenings at school. We were given a bench pillar drill about a year ago when the previous teacher was in charge - he has left now.

When I took over, the guard from the drill was missing but we had no cause to use the drill (long story). Recently we have decided to bring back both the Scroll Saw and this Pillar drill into operation. I needed to source a new safety guard.

I rang the number in the instruction book and the man on the customer service line said a new guard was not available.

I then decided to contact Screwfix because they had supplied the drill and it was their own brand (Titan). I followed the Feedback link and sent a message stating what I wanted, and gave my full name.

In less than an hour I had a reply saying that no guard was available but that it was a universal size and that I could try two other suppliers.

There was a footnote. "Did you go to the King's School Peterborough in the 1970s?". The message was signed by one of the few friends I had had in my time there.

"Yes" I replied.

It turns out that he runs a department of guys who answer emails and was bored so he had decided to 'spy' (I'm sure there's a better word - 'check', 'oversee', 'look in') on his workers to see what they were currently doing and he saw my name. He then took charge of that piece of feedback.

Amazing or what to be in touch after 35 years? We went our separate ways after 'O' levels for reasons I will not go into here, though we share a couple of mutual friends.

Voi che sapete

Just in case you happen to be learning this song as one of my pupils is. It is a bit long, but the singer 'gets it' at the end.

Depression and Suicide

No not mine, though as one previously affected by depression I feel I can say what follows.

The TS family were surprised at the announcement at the end of Dr. Who today. "If you have been affected by any of the issues raised in this programme..." - the sort of thing they usually put after Casualty.

Although we understood the reason why, other issues could have included

  • being arty farty
  • affected by time travel
  • being ginger
  • cannot get served in a cafe (failure to pay bills)
  • Seeing things

Just an observation.

Will they be adding this message after every episode?

I can't believe I'm sharing this

Over at Bringing up Charlie there's a post about the words young children use. I suppose every family, parent, child has their own repertoire with quite a bit of overlap.

My mother had a unique term which I have NEVER come across before or since.

It isn't nice.

If you are eating come back and read this later.

If bodily functions disgust you turn away now.

You have been warned.

Sure?

Well,

When I was young (i.e. about 45 years ago) if I went to my mother and hinted that my poo was not as might generally be expected (as a result of some dietary indiscretion perhaps) she would not ask (obviously because the word is too technical)...

"Have you got Diarrhoea?"

Her question would use a more onomatopoetic term:

"Was it oddlelydods?" (4 syllables, having never seen it written down I'm guessing at the spelling)

My dark secret is out.

I encourage use of this word. If I start to hear it amongst parents of young children I shall know that my blog post has influenced the world. What more can a guy ask?
